When asked to write a story in only six words, Ernest Hemingway responded with: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” In November 2006, Larry Smith, author and publisher of Smith Magazine, asked people to describe their lives in six words. He received inspiring, funny, and heartwarming submissions, and the Six-Word Memoir project began.
As part of the San Diego Area Writing Project’s Environmental Literacy and Justice Advanced Institute, we explored six-word stories as a way to express climate anxiety—and hope.
