Inspiration from Young Writers in Nature and Beyond

Young Writers in Nature (YWN) has been a cornerstone of the San Diego Area Writing Project’s Young Writers Camp programs for over a decade. I have coordinated or taught for YWN since its inception. During the 5-day camp, held at the University of California, San Diego, campers explore local habitats, learn about native plants, create nature notebooks, and engage in nature-inspired writing across a variety of genres.

Each summer, our teacher consultants and teaching assistants submit lesson plans based on their favorite activities, which are collected in a lesson bank. These lessons offer a wide range of inspiring, nature-based writing ideas that can be adapted to any educational setting. From writing pledges for the planet to crafting magical creature field notes, there’s something for everyone in our Young Writers in Nature resource repository.

Although we’ve been gathering these lessons since 2012, they’ve previously only been available to our YWC teaching staff. Now, we invite you to explore and discover this diverse collection of creative resources.
